Gru's story centers around him trying out for the Vicious 6 and meeting Wild Knuckles, the group's disgraced former founder, who turns out to be Gru's favorite bad guy. Knuckle is a loner who treats his minions like trash. Guru is similar in many ways. And yet, through tonally "serious" passages that cause them to dwell on nothing in particular and for no clear reason, their collective coming-to-Jesus moment only exists in theory.
Whatever story The Rise of Gru may have, it sways like an actual kid's movie in its empty skin suit. In order to assist Gru, it sends Kevin, Stuart, and Bob on one route and Otto on another, but both plotlines appear to be very anti-dramatic and anti-comedic.
The Minions are on a mission, and part of the fun is that they are disorganized yellow pill creatures that are dressing up as people in a variety of outfits, but at the end of the day, nobody seems to notice that they are Minions. They use dialogue in some of their jokes, but these jokes require the ability to understand literal nonsense.
The involvement of supporting characters voiced by Michelle Yeoh, Julie Andrews, and RZA also speeds by without much of an impact. When the Minions do cause a commotion, it's typically the result of "lol random" decisions that are completely at odds with whatever they are trying to accomplish in a scene.
